  • leaves alternate, ovate-elliptic, generally with a smooth margin
  • leaves deep green, with a pointed tip
  • buds small, superposed, naked
  • stems smooth, green-brown, zig-zag
  • flowers are white, pendulous bells in May-June
  • fruit are pendulous, rounded, green, resembling buds
  • fruit are persistent, turning brown; a good ID feature
  • bark smooth, gray, with vertical orange fissures
  • habit is a small to medium tree with wide spreading, horizontal branches
