- leaves medium green, lighter beneath
- leaves have minor marginal serrations, pointed tip
- buds superposed, imbricate, brown
- stems brown, smooth or pubescent, slightly zig-zag
- flowers bell-like, pendulous, white, in late spring (larger than
H. tetraptera)
- fruit resemble a 4-winged "football", green to brown (larger
than H. tetraptera)
- fruit hang, persist and are good ID features
- bark is scaly and rough (contrast with H. tetraptera)
- habit is a medium-sized tree, with 1-3 main trunks and a rounded
crown (contrast with H. tetraptera)
