  • leaves alternate, simple, ovate to elliptical (larger than H. tetraptera)
  • leaves medium green, lighter beneath
  • leaves have minor marginal serrations, pointed tip
  • buds superposed, imbricate, brown
  • stems brown, smooth or pubescent, slightly zig-zag
  • flowers bell-like, pendulous, white, in late spring (larger than H. tetraptera)
  • fruit resemble a 4-winged "football", green to brown (larger than H. tetraptera)
  • fruit hang, persist and are good ID features
  • bark is scaly and rough (contrast with H. tetraptera)
  • habit is a medium-sized tree, with 1-3 main trunks and a rounded crown (contrast with H. tetraptera)
