Located on the back side of the Grange Dorms.

  • leaves alternate, simple, ovate to elliptical
  • leaves medium green, lighter beneath
  • leaves have minor marginal serrations, pointed tip
  • buds superposed, imbricate, brown
  • stems brown, smooth or pubescent, slightly zig-zag
  • flowers bell-like, pendulous, white, in late spring
  • fruit resemble a 4-winged "football", green to brown
  • fruit hang, persist and are good ID features
  • bark smooth, gray, with vertical striping or fissuring (contrast with H. t. subsp. monticola)
  • habit is a small multi-branched tree or a large shrub (contrast with H. t. subsp. monticola)
