  • leaves alternate, linear, with serrated margins
  • leaves medium green, slightly pubescent underneath
  • buds with a single scale, flattened, yellow-brown, appressed to stem
  • stems thin, smooth and shiny, yellow-green to yellow-brown (a good ID feature in winter)
  • flowers are catkins ("pussy willows") in spring
  • fruit is inconspicuous
  • bark thick, corky, fissured and furrowed, brown
  • habit is a large tree with an open, rounded crown
  • tree is messy and twigs, branches and leaves are always present on the ground beneath the canopy
