- leaves alternate, linear, with serrated margins
- leaves medium green, slightly pubescent underneath
- buds with a single scale, flattened, yellow-brown, appressed to
stem
- stems thin, smooth and shiny, yellow-green to yellow-brown (a good
ID feature in winter)
- flowers are catkins ("pussy willows") in spring
- fruit is inconspicuous
- bark thick, corky, fissured and furrowed, brown
- habit is a large tree with an open, rounded crown
- tree is messy and twigs, branches and leaves are always present
on the ground beneath the canopy
