  • leaves glossy dark green, with serrated margins
  • buds purple-red, with a single scale
  • stems are the most notable feature
  • stems are often fasciated, whereby a number of stems are fused together to form a flattened structure
  • stems are dark red-purple-brown and often twist in an artistic fashion
  • flowers are gray catkins, produced abundantly along the stems in spring
  • fruit is of no consequence
  • habit is a large, suckering shrub with many stems
