  • leaves opposite, large (to 8" long), lobed like an oak leaf with 3-7 lobes
  • leaves dark green, coarse, lighter beneath, with indented rugose surface
  • buds imbricate, light brown; laterals divergent, terminal very large
  • stems thick, brown, with bark that peals on older stems
  • stems are coarse and bear few side branches
  • flowers are white (aging to pink-brown), arranged in conical panicles
  • flower panicles have large white sterile florets and small fertile florets
  • fruit is a capsule that persists with the dried inflorescence
  • habit is a medium to large shrub with coarse, thick stems
