- leaves opposite, large (to 8" long), lobed like an oak leaf
with 3-7 lobes
- leaves dark green, coarse, lighter beneath, with indented rugose
surface
- buds imbricate, light brown; laterals divergent, terminal very large
- stems thick, brown, with bark that peals on older stems
- stems are coarse and bear few side branches
- flowers are white (aging to pink-brown), arranged in conical panicles
- flower panicles have large white sterile florets and small fertile
florets
- fruit is a capsule that persists with the dried inflorescence
- habit is a medium to large shrub with coarse, thick stems
