  • leaves opposite (may be whorled at a node), elliptic
  • leaves dark green, with serrated margin
  • buds rounded, imbricate, globular, sometimes borne more than 2 at a node
  • stems thick, smooth to rough, gray with streaks
  • flowers white (aging to pink), arranged in pyramidal panicles, sterile outer florets are large and showy, inner fertile florets are small
  • fruit is a capsule, persisting with the dried florets
  • bark develops ridges and furrows with age
  • habit is usually a small single-stemmed tree (standard), or a multi-stemmed large shrub
  • texture is coarse and stiff, with arching branches
