  • leaves bright green, leaf tip acuminate
  • buds naked, enclosed by miniature leaves, hairy
  • stems smooth, gray, with bark that shreds with age
  • flowers white, in pendulous panicles, in late spring
  • fruit a dry drupe, with prominent bristly hairs, in hanging clusters
  • fruit persistent and a good ID feature
  • bark rather smooth, brown-gray, with vertical striations
  • habit a small multi-stemmed tree or large shrub
