- leaves alternate, oblong-ovate, almost smooth margin
- leaves bright green, leaf tip acuminate
- buds naked, enclosed by miniature leaves, hairy
- stems smooth, gray, with bark that shreds with age
- flowers white, in pendulous panicles, in late spring
- fruit a dry drupe, with prominent bristly hairs, in hanging clusters
- fruit persistent and a good ID feature
- bark rather smooth, brown-gray, with vertical striations
- habit a small multi-stemmed tree or large shrub
