  • leaves alternate, ovate, leathery, glossy, with long petiole
  • leaves deep green, with crenate or slightly wavy margin
  • buds large, pointed, divergent, covered with silky silvery hair
  • stems smooth, brown
  • flowers white, profuse, malodorous, in early spring before leaves
  • fruit is a small brown-green pome with whitish dots on surface
  • bark with fissures/furrows, brown
  • habit is a medium-size, single stem tree that is upright and often pyramidal
