- leaves alternate, ovate, leathery, glossy, with long petiole
- leaves deep green, with crenate or slightly wavy margin
- buds large, pointed, divergent, covered with silky silvery hair
- stems smooth, brown
- flowers white, profuse, malodorous, in early spring before leaves
- fruit is a small brown-green pome with whitish dots on surface
- bark with fissures/furrows, brown
- habit is a medium-size, single stem tree that is upright and often
pyramidal
