  • leaves alternate, with 3-5 deeply cut lobes
  • leaves blue-green, with dentations on lobes
  • buds imbricate, stalked, pointed, gray-brown
  • stems slightly hairy, gray-brown
  • flowers yellow, tubular, very fragrant (like cloves), in early spring, in racemes
  • fruit is a black berry
  • habit is a medium shrub, suckering and somewhat messy, with arching branches
