- leaves alternate, with 3-5 deeply cut lobes
- leaves blue-green, with dentations on lobes
- buds imbricate, stalked, pointed, gray-brown
- stems slightly hairy, gray-brown
- flowers yellow, tubular, very fragrant (like cloves), in early spring,
in racemes
- fruit is a black berry
- habit is a medium shrub, suckering and somewhat messy, with arching
branches
