  • leaves alternate, small, elliptical, with serrations on tip
  • leaves blue-green on top, distinct silvery underneath
  • buds small, appressed, imbricate
  • stems smooth, deep red-brown, angled
  • flowers white, small, in axillary corymbs along stems, in spring
  • fruit are brown capsules, persisting along stems in winter
  • bark on older stems is striped and may exfoliate
  • habit is a medium-size multi-stemmed shrub with an upright, arching habit
