- leaves alternate, with 3 lobes, serrated margins
- leaves triangular, medium green
- buds rounded, imbricate, red-brown
- stems smooth, brown, with prominent woody thorns
- flowers white, malodorous, clustered, in June
- fruit are pomes, red, clustered, persistent
- habit is a small to medium tree (larger than other rosaceous plants
covered in lab)
- bark rough, scaly
