- leaves alternate, obovate to elliptic, with some minor serrations
toward tip
- leaves medium green
- buds imbricate, oval, with scales that are fringed
- stems thin, round, brown, with rough lenticels and ridges
- flower buds are white, round and resemble pearls
- flowers are white, in racemes, in early spring
- fruit is a capsule that is winged and shaped like a turban
- fruit starts green and proceeds to yellow and brown
- habit is a multi-stemmed, fountain-like shrub
- plant is loose, floppy and a bit messy with age
