  • leaves alternate, compound pinnate, small, with 3-7 leaflets
  • leaflets blue-green, elliptic or lanceolate
  • buds small, inconspicuous
  • stems slender, brown, shiny, with bark that peels with age
  • flowers yellow (or white, orange, etc.), produced from late spring to frost, solitary or in small groups
  • fruit not conspicuous, but the base of the flower (calyx) often persists on the stem as a brown star
  • habit is a small to medium shrub, very dense and compact
