- buds imbricate, green-brown, smooth
- stems green, smooth, round, arching, sparsely branched
- flowers yellow, rose-like, in early spring; flowers are often double
on cultivars
- fruit are usually not seen
- habit is a multi-stemmed, suckering shrub with an arching habit
- plant retains green color in winter
