  • leaves alternate, ovate to oblong, serrated margin
  • leaves deep green, turning red-yellow in fall and dropping early
  • buds long, pointed, imbricate, green to red-brown, fairly appressed
  • stems smooth, gray-red, with whitish lenticels
  • flowers white, in clusters, before leaves in early spring
  • fruit is a pome, ripening red, often gone by late summer
  • bark smooth, gray, with fine vertical lines
  • habit a large shrub or small tree, often multi-stemmed
