  • leaves simple, ovate, opposite (unusual for rosaceous plants)
  • leaves doubly serrate, coarse, with heavily pleated veins for a rough leaf surface (rugose)
  • buds imbricate, plump, brown-green, opposite
  • stems smooth, brown
  • flowers white, rose-like, in spring
  • fruit is a distinctive feature; hard, shiny black drupes borne in a group
  • fruit persist, ripen in October, held above persistent calyx of flower
  • habit is a small to medium multi-stemmed shrub
  • texture may be coarse, with irregular branching and long arching stems
  • plant suckers to form colonies
