Wisteria floribunda

Located along wall in perennial border near Ratcliffe Hicks Arena.
- Leaves alternate, odd pinnate, with 13-19 leaflets, large (to 15"
long)
- leaflets bright green, ovate, coming to acuminate point, large
- buds imbricate, appressed, red brown, pointed
- stems smooth, tan-brown, with small spine-like projections around
the dormant buds
- stems long, thick, vining, twisting clockwise around objects
- flowers very showy, early spring, pea-like
- flowers violet, fragrant, borne in hanging racemes
- flowers on raceme open from base to apex; plant may flower sporadically
in summer
- fruit a pod (legume), pendulous, green to yellow-brown, covered
by fuzzy felt
- habit a strong, woody vine (may be trained into tree)
- plant twists around any available support, but may trail along ground
as well
- bark on old stems in smooth, gray, fluted and "muscular"
