  • leaflets elliptical, light green, with entire margin, attached to main axis (rachis) with almost no petiolule (sessile)
  • buds black, scaly, small, sessile
  • buds concealed by base of leaf petiole
  • stems smooth, thin, bright green
  • stem color persists all year on young twigs
  • flowers cream-white, pea-like, in panicles, showy, in late summer
  • fruit very distinctive, a green pod with constrictions between the rounded seeds
  • fruit resembles a green string of pearls
  • habit is an medium tree with an upright, rounded crown
