- leaves alternate, odd pinnate, with 7 to 17 leaflets
- leaflets elliptical, light green, with entire margin, attached to
main axis (rachis) with almost no petiolule (sessile)
- buds black, scaly, small, sessile
- buds concealed by base of leaf petiole
- stems smooth, thin, bright green
- stem color persists all year on young twigs
- flowers cream-white, pea-like, in panicles, showy, in late summer
- fruit very distinctive, a green pod with constrictions between the
rounded seeds
- fruit resembles a green string of pearls
- habit is an medium tree with an upright, rounded crown
