  • leaves have serrated margin, pointed tip, pair of glands on petiole
  • leaves deep green, often with purplish tones
  • buds large, pointed, imbricate, widely divergent
  • buds often borne three at a node
  • stems smooth, red-brown
  • flowers showy, pink, double or single, in spring
  • fruit a black-purple drupe, often not seen
  • bark showy, smooth, shiny, red-brown, with horizontal lenticels
  • habit is a small to medium tree, upright-rounded, often with a vase-like shape
