- leaves simple, alternate, large, to 5" long
- leaves have serrated margin, pointed tip, pair of glands on petiole
- leaves deep green, often with purplish tones
- buds large, pointed, imbricate, widely divergent
- buds often borne three at a node
- stems smooth, red-brown
- flowers showy, pink, double or single, in spring
- fruit a black-purple drupe, often not seen
- bark showy, smooth, shiny, red-brown, with horizontal lenticels
- habit is a small to medium tree, upright-rounded, often with a vase-like
shape
