- leaves alternate, very large, bipinnately compound
- leaves have 6-14 pinnae, each of which bears many leaflets
- leaflets elliptic to ovate, blue-green, entire
- leaf scars very large
- buds found above leaf scar, almost embedded in stem, visible through
"belly button" hole
- stems coarse, thick, gray-brown, rough
- flowers green-white, in panicles
- fruit is a short, rounded pod borne in panicle
- fruit found only on female trees (species is dioecious)
- bark distinctive, rough and textures, with plates separated by fissures
- habit a large tree, with thick branches that lend a coarse texture
