  • leaves doubly serrate, glossy deep green, pointed
  • leaves have glands at leaf base
  • buds imbricate, pointed, nearly parallel to stem
  • stems brown-red, smooth
  • flowers pink, showy, borne in early spring
  • fruit is a red-black drupe, often sparse or absent
  • habit is a small to medium tree, with distinct weeping habit (most notable feature)
  • plant is grafted, often with swollen (visible) graft union
  • plant may produce non-weeping, vertical suckers from below graft union (often with different morphology)
