- leaves alternate, simple, linear-ovate, long (to 4")
- leaves doubly serrate, glossy deep green, pointed
- leaves have glands at leaf base
- buds imbricate, pointed, nearly parallel to stem
- stems brown-red, smooth
- flowers pink, showy, borne in early spring
- fruit is a red-black drupe, often sparse or absent
- habit is a small to medium tree, with distinct weeping habit (most
notable feature)
- plant is grafted, often with swollen (visible) graft union
- plant may produce non-weeping, vertical suckers from below graft
union (often with different morphology)
