- Leaves alternate, simple (unusual for plants in the pea family)
cordate, wide
- leaves medium green, smooth-margined, yellow in fall
- flower buds prominent, stalked, in clusters along branches
- flower buds borne on old growth (caulescent flowering), even on
trunk (unusual for hardy trees)
- stems dark brown, smooth, zig-zag
- flowers small, pea-like, bright pink, borne tight along branches
in early spring before leaves
- fruit a pod, thin, small, green to yellow-brown
- bark scaly, gray-brown
- habit is a small tree, usually single stem, low-branching
