  • Leaves alternate, simple (unusual for plants in the pea family) cordate, wide
  • leaves medium green, smooth-margined, yellow in fall
  • flower buds prominent, stalked, in clusters along branches
  • flower buds borne on old growth (caulescent flowering), even on trunk (unusual for hardy trees)
  • stems dark brown, smooth, zig-zag
  • flowers small, pea-like, bright pink, borne tight along branches in early spring before leaves
  • fruit a pod, thin, small, green to yellow-brown
  • bark scaly, gray-brown
  • habit is a small tree, usually single stem, low-branching
