  • leaves alternate, pinnately compound, even pinnate, with 10-14 leaflets
  • leaflets bright green, rounded-ovoid, to 1" long
  • stems smooth, green, with lines/lenticels
  • stems often bear sharp, thorn-like stipules at petiole scars
  • flowers yellow, pea-like, in early spring
  • fruit a small pod, with halves that twist upon splitting
  • bark green-brown, fairly smooth, with horizontal lenticels
  • habit a large multi-stemmed shrub or small tree
