- leaves alternate, pinnately compound, even pinnate, with 10-14 leaflets
- leaflets bright green, rounded-ovoid, to 1" long
- stems smooth, green, with lines/lenticels
- stems often bear sharp, thorn-like stipules at petiole scars
- flowers yellow, pea-like, in early spring
- fruit a small pod, with halves that twist upon splitting
- bark green-brown, fairly smooth, with horizontal lenticels
- habit a large multi-stemmed shrub or small tree
