- leaflets ovate to elliptic, entire, bright blue-green, turning orange-yellow
in fall
- buds pointed, black, hidden beneath petiole base
- stems glabrous, dark gray-brown
- flowers white, pea-like, in May, in terminal compound drooping racemes
- fruit a flat pod, in clusters, turning brown, persistent
- bark smooth, gray, with raised lenticels
- habit a medium tree, rounded canopy
