  • leaves alternate, even pinnate or bi-pinnate compound, with many small leaflets
  • leaflets bright green, ovate, smooth margined
  • buds small and difficult to see
  • stems coarse, thick, with swollen nodes, zig-zag
  • flowers not showy, in spring
  • fruit is a long, thick twisted black pod
  • fruit often absent on cultivars (as with thorns)
  • bark gray, with wide smooth strips interrupted by irregular furrows
  • habit is a medium to large tree, single trunk
  • texture is open, with horizontal spreading branches
