- leaves alternate, even pinnate or bi-pinnate compound, with many
small leaflets
- leaflets bright green, ovate, smooth margined
- buds small and difficult to see
- stems coarse, thick, with swollen nodes, zig-zag
- flowers not showy, in spring
- fruit is a long, thick twisted black pod
- fruit often absent on cultivars (as with thorns)
- bark gray, with wide smooth strips interrupted by irregular furrows
- habit is a medium to large tree, single trunk
- texture is open, with horizontal spreading branches
