  • leaves alternate, deciduous, simple, obovate to elliptic/lanceolate
  • leaves with smooth margin, glossy, deep green
  • leaves turn to bright shades in fall
  • buds imbricate, large, oval, pointed, brown
  • stems smooth, brown-red
  • stems bear many small spur-like branchlets, short with closely spaced bud scale scars
  • flowers small, green-yellow, appear with leaf development
  • fruit is an oval drupe, blue-black, persisting into mid-fall
  • bark dark brown, ridged vertically with horizontal seams to form a block-like texture
  • habit is a medium tree, pyramidal with dense branching
  • plant bears lateral branches which often join the trunk at a perpendicular angle
