Located on front lawn near president's house.
- leaves alternate, deciduous, simple, obovate to elliptic/lanceolate
- leaves with smooth margin, glossy, deep green
- leaves turn to bright shades in fall
- buds imbricate, large, oval, pointed, brown
- stems smooth, brown-red
- stems bear many small spur-like branchlets, short with closely spaced
bud scale scars
- flowers small, green-yellow, appear with leaf development
- fruit is an oval drupe, blue-black, persisting into mid-fall
- bark dark brown, ridged vertically with horizontal seams to form
a block-like texture
- habit is a medium tree, pyramidal with dense branching
- plant bears lateral branches which often join the trunk at a perpendicular
angle
