- leaves alternate (unusual for Cornus), elliptic-rounded with an
acuminate tip
- leaves have smooth margin, are deep green
- leaves appear whorled at branch tips
- vegetative buds small, valvate
- floral buds located at tips of branches, red-purple, valvate, smooth
at base and hairy at tip
- stems smooth, green to red-brown
- flowers cream colored, in flat topped cymes
- fruit a blue-black drupe, held by reddish pedicel stems that persist
after fruit
- habit unique; a small tree or large shrub with branches borne in
distinct layers
- plant may be single or multi-stemmed
