  • leaves have smooth margin, are deep green
  • leaves appear whorled at branch tips
  • vegetative buds small, valvate
  • floral buds located at tips of branches, red-purple, valvate, smooth at base and hairy at tip
  • stems smooth, green to red-brown
  • flowers cream colored, in flat topped cymes
  • fruit a blue-black drupe, held by reddish pedicel stems that persist after fruit
  • habit unique; a small tree or large shrub with branches borne in distinct layers
  • plant may be single or multi-stemmed
