- leaves simple, alternate, rounded-orbicular
- leaves deep green, with serrated margin.
- buds globular, with loose scales
- stems smooth, tan, with lenticels
- stems often have spiny projections at nodes which aid in climbing
- flowers small, in axillary clusters
- fruit prominent, yellow capsules splitting to reveal bright orange
seeds
- fruit found only on female plants (dioecious)
- habit is a vigorous, twining vine with woody stems that wrap around
supports
- plant is very weedy and spreads by seed; can be found invading many
cultivated plantings
