  • leaves simple, alternate, rounded-orbicular
  • leaves deep green, with serrated margin.
  • buds globular, with loose scales
  • stems smooth, tan, with lenticels
  • stems often have spiny projections at nodes which aid in climbing
  • flowers small, in axillary clusters
  • fruit prominent, yellow capsules splitting to reveal bright orange seeds
  • fruit found only on female plants (dioecious)
  • habit is a vigorous, twining vine with woody stems that wrap around supports
  • plant is very weedy and spreads by seed; can be found invading many cultivated plantings
