  • leaves opposite, deciduous, elliptic-obovate, coming to point
  • leaves minutely serrate, dark green
  • leaves turn bright pink to red in fall
  • buds imbricate, green-brown/red, oval, pointed
  • buds interrupt the corky wings along stems
  • stems angled, green-brown, with prominent corky lateral "wings" of tissue on sides twigs
  • stem wings interrupted by buds; most prominent on vigorous young shoots
  • flowers small, yellow-green, inconspicuous, late spring, in axillary cymes
  • fruit a red capsule, splitting to reveal a bright orange-red seed
  • habit is a medium to large, multi-stemmed rounded shrub with stiff horizontal branches
  • plant self seeds readily and may be found naturalized in the landscape and wild areas
