- leaves opposite, simple, ovate to elliptic, coming to point
- leaves dark green, glossy, with smooth margin
- foliar buds valvate, somewhat divergent, silky green
- flower buds rounded, valvate, without point on tip
- flower buds sit on stalk, borne is leaf axles all along stems (unlike
C. florida and C. kousa)
- stems angled, reddish, fairly smooth
- flowers in earliest spring, yellow
- fruit an oblong drupe, hanging, bright red, like a cherry
- bark rich brown and peeling/exfoliating when old
- habit a large shrub or small tree, multistemmed, shrubby, rounded
