Located near side entrance of Manchester hall.

  • leaves opposite, simple, ovate to elliptic, coming to point
  • leaves dark green, glossy, with smooth margin
  • foliar buds valvate, somewhat divergent, silky green
  • flower buds rounded, valvate, without point on tip
  • flower buds sit on stalk, borne is leaf axles all along stems (unlike C. florida and C. kousa)
  • stems angled, reddish, fairly smooth
  • flowers in earliest spring, yellow
  • fruit an oblong drupe, hanging, bright red, like a cherry
  • bark rich brown and peeling/exfoliating when old
  • habit a large shrub or small tree, multistemmed, shrubby, rounded
