  • Leaves opposite, 3-lobed, with middle lobe much longer than lateral two
  • leaves dark green, with doubly serrate margins
  • buds small, imbricate, red-brown, smooth
  • stems gray-brown, with eventual striping
  • flowers yellow-white, fragrant, borne as leaves emerge
  • fruit is a schizocarp, with small samaras that are nearly parallel and overlap at tips
  • bark gray-brown, smooth and striped on younger stems; fissured when old
  • habit is a multi-stemmed large shrub or small tree, rounded
