- leaves dark green, with doubly serrate margins
- buds small, imbricate, red-brown, smooth
- stems gray-brown, with eventual striping
- flowers yellow-white, fragrant, borne as leaves emerge
- fruit is a schizocarp, with small samaras that are nearly parallel
and overlap at tips
- bark gray-brown, smooth and striped on younger stems; fissured when
old
- habit is a multi-stemmed large shrub or small tree, rounded
