- leaves opposite, small, dark green, with 3-5 lobes
- leaves usually have 3 primary lobes, with rounded edges
- buds imbricate, brown-black, small, pubescent
- stems light brown, with lenticels/fissures
- flowers green, in corymbs, in May
- fruit a schizocarp, with the samaras forming a 180° angle
- bark gray-black, with fissures/furrows
- habit is a rounded, dense medium tree
