  • leaves opposite, 3-lobed, with lobes pointed forward
  • leaves dark green, glossy, sinuses often very shallow
  • leaves may have elongated central lobe
  • buds imbricate, pointed, pyramidal, pubescent
  • stems gray-brown when young, pubescent, with small lenticels
  • flowers green-yellow, in early spring
  • fruit a schizocarp, samaras small and held at a roughly 45° angle
  • bark brown-orange, peeling/exfoliating in strips
  • habit a small to medium tree, often low branched or multiple stemmed
