- leaves opposite, 3-lobed, with lobes pointed forward
- leaves dark green, glossy, sinuses often very shallow
- leaves may have elongated central lobe
- buds imbricate, pointed, pyramidal, pubescent
- stems gray-brown when young, pubescent, with small lenticels
- flowers green-yellow, in early spring
- fruit a schizocarp, samaras small and held at a roughly 45°
angle
- bark brown-orange, peeling/exfoliating in strips
- habit a small to medium tree, often low branched or multiple stemmed
