Located on left side of W.B. Young Bldg.
- leaves opposite, large, 5-lobed, 2 basal lobes are much smaller
than 3 primary lobes
- leaves dark green, with coarse crenate-serrate margins
- leaves thick and coarse in texture, with indented veins and long
petiole
- buds similar to A. platanoides, but remain green even in
winter (Norway maple buds turn red-purple)
- buds ovoid, large, fleshy, imbricate, smooth, green
- stems smooth, gray-brown
- flowers yellow-green, in upright panicles, borne after leaves emerge
(contrast with A. platanoides)
- fruit is a schizocarp, with samaras that diverge at 60° angle
- fruit are borne in a drooping cluster (a chain, or panicle), contrast
with corymbs of A. platanoides and A. saccharum
- bark red-brown to orange, peals irregularly to expose orange-brown
inner layer
- habit is a large tree with spreading branches that form a rounded
crown
