  • leaves opposite, simple, ovate, acuminate
  • leaves dark green, with entire (smooth) margin
  • buds rounded, imbricate, brownish, rather small
  • stems thick, smooth, glossy deep brown, with many lenticels
  • flowers creamy white, small, in large terminal panicles, after other Syringa in early summer
  • fruit is a long, narrow capsule, large, light brown
  • fruit is arranged in large, persistent panicles
  • bark deep red-brown, with prominent horizontal lenticels, similar to many Prunus species
  • habit is a large shrub or small tree, with an open rounded crown (large for a lilac)
  • plant may be single-stemmed or multi-stemmed
