- leaves opposite, simple, ovate, acuminate
- leaves dark green, with entire (smooth) margin
- buds rounded, imbricate, brownish, rather small
- stems thick, smooth, glossy deep brown, with many lenticels
- flowers creamy white, small, in large terminal panicles, after other
Syringa in early summer
- fruit is a long, narrow capsule, large, light brown
- fruit is arranged in large, persistent panicles
- bark deep red-brown, with prominent horizontal lenticels, similar
to many Prunus species
- habit is a large shrub or small tree, with an open rounded crown
(large for a lilac)
- plant may be single-stemmed or multi-stemmed
