- leaves opposite, pinnate compound, with 5-11 leaflets
- leaflets ovate-oblong, acuminate, with crenate margins
- leaves deep green, glossy
- buds oval, pointed, with 2 scales, brown, not hidden by petiole
base (unlike Phellodendron)
- stems brown, smooth, somewhat wrinkled
- flowers small, white, in large flat clusters, in summer
- fruit showy, capsules, red-black, in cluster, persistent
- bark distinctive, smooth gray, resembles beech (Fagus)
- habit is a small to medium, upright-rounded tree
- plant usually branches low to ground into lateral trunks
