  • leaflets ovate-oblong, acuminate, with crenate margins
  • leaves deep green, glossy
  • buds oval, pointed, with 2 scales, brown, not hidden by petiole base (unlike Phellodendron)
  • stems brown, smooth, somewhat wrinkled
  • flowers small, white, in large flat clusters, in summer
  • fruit showy, capsules, red-black, in cluster, persistent
  • bark distinctive, smooth gray, resembles beech (Fagus)
  • habit is a small to medium, upright-rounded tree
  • plant usually branches low to ground into lateral trunks
