- leaves opposite, pinnate compound, with 5 to 13 leaflets
- leaflets ovate to lanceolate, acuminate, glossy deep green
- buds flattened, with 2 scales, red-brown, silky
- buds are contained within large horseshoe-shaped leaf scars (hidden
by petiole, unlike Evodia)
- stems yellow-brown, thick, with prominent lenticels
- flowers yellow-green, in panicles, mid-spring
- fruit is a round, green-black drupe, smells strongly of citrus when
bruised
- fruit borne only on female trees (dioecy)
- bark distinctive, with deep/wide fissures, light gray-brown, very
thick and corky
- habit is a medium size tree, with open-rounded crown
- plant often branches low into a few major trunks
