  • leaves opposite, pinnate compound, with 5 to 13 leaflets
  • leaflets ovate to lanceolate, acuminate, glossy deep green
  • buds flattened, with 2 scales, red-brown, silky
  • buds are contained within large horseshoe-shaped leaf scars (hidden by petiole, unlike Evodia)
  • stems yellow-brown, thick, with prominent lenticels
  • flowers yellow-green, in panicles, mid-spring
  • fruit is a round, green-black drupe, smells strongly of citrus when bruised
  • fruit borne only on female trees (dioecy)
  • bark distinctive, with deep/wide fissures, light gray-brown, very thick and corky
  • habit is a medium size tree, with open-rounded crown
  • plant often branches low into a few major trunks
