  • leaves opposite, simple, ovate, acuminate, larger than S. x chinensis
  • leaves dark green, with entire (smooth) margin
  • buds imbricate, large, fleshy, ovoid, pointed, with green-red-brown scales
  • terminal flower bud larger than lateral floral buds, often there are two terminal buds
  • buds larger than S. x chinensis
  • stems thick, angled, smooth, brown, with small lenticels
  • flowers small, purple/white/pink, in large terminal panicles
  • fruit is an elongated capsule, like a beak, brown, persistent (contrast with S. x chinensis)
  • habit is a large shrub (small tree in time), with thick/coarse stems, less twiggy than S. x chinensis
  • plant is upright and often becomes leggy in time
