- leaves alternate, oblong-round, with round or notched tip
- leaves with long petiole, blue-green, smooth margin
- buds small, round, brown-black
- stems smooth, round, brown-purple, with a waxy bloom sometimes
- stems smell strongly of pine when crushed
- flowers small, yellow green, in summer, in panicles
- flowers have plumes of hairs on pedicels which create a showy "smoky"
effect from a distance
- flower "smoke" starts creamy white and ages to pink
- flower panicle axes often persist after flowers are gone
- fruit small and inconspicuous
- bark develops blockiness when old, brown-gray
- habit is a large shrub or small tree
- habit is rounded to irregular
- plants is usually multi-stemmed, but may be trained to a standard
