  • leaves alternate, oblong-round, with round or notched tip
  • leaves with long petiole, blue-green, smooth margin
  • buds small, round, brown-black
  • stems smooth, round, brown-purple, with a waxy bloom sometimes
  • stems smell strongly of pine when crushed
  • flowers small, yellow green, in summer, in panicles
  • flowers have plumes of hairs on pedicels which create a showy "smoky" effect from a distance
  • flower "smoke" starts creamy white and ages to pink
  • flower panicle axes often persist after flowers are gone
  • fruit small and inconspicuous
  • bark develops blockiness when old, brown-gray
  • habit is a large shrub or small tree
  • habit is rounded to irregular
  • plants is usually multi-stemmed, but may be trained to a standard tree
