  • leaves alternate, pinnate compound, with 7-15 leaflets
  • leaflets bright green, ovate to oblong, coarsely serrate, often appearing lobed
  • buds flattened, large, brown-orange, valvate
  • stems thick, olive-brown, with orange-brown lenticels when old
  • flowers yellow, in drooping panicles, in summer
  • fruit is a 3-valved pyramidal capsule, inflated, papery and green-brown
  • fruit persist and appear as panicles of brown lanterns
  • bark lightly furrowed, light gray with orange highlights
  • habit is a small to medium, rounded tree
  • plant is usually single-stemmed, may be multi-stemmed
