Kalopanax septemlobus

Located in back of Ratcliffe Hicks arena near concrete wall and garden.
- leaves alternate, simple, with 5-7 lobes, large, with long petiole
- leaf lobes are shallow, pointed, triangular, like sweetgum (Liquidambar)
- leaves have slight serrations, bright green
- buds brown-green, imbricate, pointed
- stems coarse, thick, club-like, yellow-brown
- stems bear many sharp prickles, little twiggy growth
- flowers small, white, in large umbellate panicles (umbel of umbels),
in late summer to fall
- fruit is a drupe, small, black
- bark fissured/furrowed, gray-black, with sharp prickles persisting
even on the oldest wood
- habit is a medium to large tree, with upright-oval shape
- habit is gaunt and irregular when young, becoming more regular with
age
- plant is usually single-stem, may be multi-stemmed as well
