Located in back of Ratcliffe Hicks arena near concrete wall and garden.

  • leaves alternate, simple, with 5-7 lobes, large, with long petiole
  • leaf lobes are shallow, pointed, triangular, like sweetgum (Liquidambar)
  • leaves have slight serrations, bright green
  • buds brown-green, imbricate, pointed
  • stems coarse, thick, club-like, yellow-brown
  • stems bear many sharp prickles, little twiggy growth
  • flowers small, white, in large umbellate panicles (umbel of umbels), in late summer to fall
  • fruit is a drupe, small, black
  • bark fissured/furrowed, gray-black, with sharp prickles persisting even on the oldest wood
  • habit is a medium to large tree, with upright-oval shape
  • habit is gaunt and irregular when young, becoming more regular with age
  • plant is usually single-stem, may be multi-stemmed as well
