- buds naked, superposed, brown
- stems slender, brown, smooth
- flowers small, pink, in axillary cymes, in summer
- fruit distinctive, metallic purple berries, in axillary clusters
- fruit often persist into late fall
- habit is medium to large, multi-stemmed shrub
- habit is upright, vase-shaped, suckering
