Located in Vi Buck memorial garden near W.B. Young building.
- leaves opposite, simple, ovate-lanceolate, smaller than S. vulgaris
- leaves acuminate, with a smooth margin, dark green
- buds imbricate, plump, pointed, with red-brown scales
- terminal flower bud larger than lateral foliar buds
- buds smaller than S. vulgaris
- stems round, smooth, brown-gray, with dotted lenticels, not as thick
and coarse as S. vulgaris
- flowers purple, in loose panicles, fragrant, in May
- fruit not produced, plant is sterile, contrast with S. vulgaris
- habit is a large, multi-stemmed shrub with broad rounded shape
- plant is more twiggy and less coarse/stiff than S. vulgaris
