  • leaves opposite, simple, ovate-lanceolate, smaller than S. vulgaris
  • leaves acuminate, with a smooth margin, dark green
  • buds imbricate, plump, pointed, with red-brown scales
  • terminal flower bud larger than lateral foliar buds
  • buds smaller than S. vulgaris
  • stems round, smooth, brown-gray, with dotted lenticels, not as thick and coarse as S. vulgaris
  • flowers purple, in loose panicles, fragrant, in May
  • fruit not produced, plant is sterile, contrast with S. vulgaris
  • habit is a large, multi-stemmed shrub with broad rounded shape
  • plant is more twiggy and less coarse/stiff than S. vulgaris
