- needles rather short, with slight twist
- needles soft, bright green
- buds cylindrical, red-brown, with resin coating
- stems smooth, green when young, becoming orange-brown
- cones small, oval-conical, persistent
- bark orange-brown, peeling in thin pieces, attractive on older branches
- habit is distinctive, a dwarf tree to 15'-20' tall, flat-topped
- plant is multi-stemmed with dense branching, wider at top than bottom
