  • needles rather short, with slight twist
  • needles soft, bright green
  • buds cylindrical, red-brown, with resin coating
  • stems smooth, green when young, becoming orange-brown
  • cones small, oval-conical, persistent
  • bark orange-brown, peeling in thin pieces, attractive on older branches
  • habit is distinctive, a dwarf tree to 15'-20' tall, flat-topped
  • plant is multi-stemmed with dense branching, wider at top than bottom
