Located on northeast side of the Waring Chemistry Bldg.

  • needles arranged 2 per fascicle
  • needles have heavy texture, dark green
  • needles 3-6" long, longest of any pine covered in course
  • needles do not break when bent
  • terminal bud large and pyramidal like a "Hershey's kiss", tan/white hairs and orange recurved basal scales
  • stems smooth, yellow to brown, ridged
  • cones conical, to 3" long, brown
  • bark very dark in color, furrowed, with flattened ridges
  • habit is usually a single-stemmed, large tree
  • plant is pyramidal when young, becoming broad and flat-topped with age
