  • stems thick, coarse, smooth, light brown when young, gray when old
  • stems feature bullet-shaped spurs when old
  • spurs have many tight growth rings, brown bud on tip
  • flowers inconspicuous, in spring
  • fruit globose, pendant, tan/orange color
  • fruit one-seeded, pulp has rank odor
  • dioecious species, only female plants bear fruit
  • bark fissured, light gray or brown
  • habit is a pyramidal tree medium to large tree, spreading when old
  • plant has upright, ascending branches with few laterals
