  • needles arranged 5 per fascicle, soft and pliable
  • needles blue-green, long, thin-textured
  • needles droop slightly, have serrated margins (contrast with P. flexilis)
  • buds oval, small, pointed, resinous
  • stems smooth, green turning brown
  • habit dense and shrubby (multi-stemmed), may be rounded or pyramidal
  • plant may achieve large size, but remains dense
  • fruit may or may not be present, similar to species
  • 'Compacta' is applied to the many dwarf cultivars that appear on campus
