Located on north side of Swan Lake near the new Chemistry Bldg. and N. Eagleville Rd.

  • needles arranged 2 per fascicle, stiff, to 4" long
  • needles have pronounced twist (good ID feature), blue-green color
  • buds ovate, pointed, red-brown, resinous, with fringed scales
  • stems smooth, green to yellow-brown with age
  • cones small, rounded, gray-brown
  • bark distinctive, becoming bright orange-brown and peeling in small flakes; darker on main trunk and plated
  • habit is a small to medium size tree
  • plant has an irregular, open habit both when young and old; often losing lowest branches
