Located on the west side of Mirror Lake.

  • needles arranged 3 per fascicle (unique among the pines covered in course), good ID feature
  • needles twisted, dark green, long (to 5"), pointed
  • buds conical, pointed, somewhat sticky (resinous)
  • stems ridged, smooth, thick and short, green becoming brown
  • bark broken into flat plates separated by fissures, brownish yellow
  • cones small and ovoid with persistent sharp points on scales (good ID feature)
  • cones often held for many years on old growth
  • habit is a single-stemmed tree, medium size, open and irregular in shape
